Iwan Tirta (April 18, 1935 – July 31, 2010)
I would like to pay homage to Iwan Tirta, a fashion designer and a man of a culture. I had the pleasure and privilege to meet Mr. Tirta and sometimes to exchange email-correspondences. I was impressed by the harmony that emanated from his personality, an inspiring feeling of self-assurance and humbleness, and an exceptional culture, that he liked to share with others.
Iwan Tirta was born in central Java. The Indonesian and the international press referred to him as the Tsar of Batik, or as Mr. Batik. A few lines and pages would not be enough to describe the many talents of a lawyer, who became a United Nations diplomat, who became a fashion designer, as well as an artisan, an innovator, and the saver of the antique Indonesian tradition of high quality batik.
Iwan Tirta dedicated his lifetime to do research on the history, the design, and the technique of batik, testifying his study by documenting, collecting, redesigning some pieces of very old batiks deteriorated by the time. He catalogued the textiles according to their location, style, colours, motifs’ significance, since a great number of the batiks had been produced in the various royal courts that existed in the past in Java.
In parallel, Iwan Tirta himself learned the technique of the art of making batik, and trained new masters to overtake and pursue the tradition that otherwise would have gone extinct. He launched successfully his fashion house, giving a new life to batik, with his fashion designs and accessoires, and decoration items, proud of re-launching and conveying to the Indonesians alike the foreigners, the original Batik, a textile of high quality requiring patience and concentration, as the true batik is designed equally on both sides of the fabric.
A legend among legends, several personalities wore the signed fashion of Iwan Tirta, among them, Indira Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, and his textile creations adorn the decoration of some of the most beautiful houses from Malibu to São Paulo . Mr. Tirta is also the author of books that document the batik heritage of Indonesia .
